In October 1998, a twenty-one-year-old University of Wyoming student was kidnapped, brutally beaten, and left tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody and battered body would not be discovered until the next day, and he would die several days later in the hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this brutal assault because he was gay.
